Pre-engineering changed the future of construction

Pre-engineering’s innovative method changed the future of construction.
Fast and affordable, steel construction is clearly the intelligent way to build industrial facilities – good reasons why it’s become the preferred choice
across the world.

Pre-engineered building construction for industrial purposes has forever changed the industry since its introduction and wide adoption. Commercial clients love the cost savings, environmental benefits and quicker return on investment. These are but a few of the reasons why this form of industrial construction has doubled its market share over the past five years compared to traditional and more complicated construction types.

Being simple, fast and affordable has helped pre-engineering building technologies to increase its market acceptance as more business owners, engineers and architects have learned to appreciate its benefits and understand its process. Working with steel is generally 30% less than the price of traditional construction and takes about as third as long to complete. Where do the savings to budget and time come from? The nature of pre-engineered steel panels reduces the need for highly specialized labour, can be installed much easier with less equipment and uses less raw material. Read more on the advantages of using steel panels.

Faster construction that’s safer and better for the environment

As Frank Melo, Director of Summit Steel Buildings, explains, “pre-engineered steel panels are prepared in our factory ahead of construction (pre-cut, pre-welded, pre-hole punched, pre-plumbed and pre-wired) so our on-site focus can be on building a strong foundation and structural components, such as beams, girders and columns as well as the interior environmental, electrical and plumbing systems. Getting steel buildings finished sooner means a faster occupancy and a higher return on investment for clients.”

The pre-engineered steel construction method (sometimes referred to as modular or prefabricated construction
within the residential building sector) offers important advantages as businesses consider other critical corporate social responsibility (CSR) factors, such as sustainability and safety. In a recent construction survey, approximately 88% of contractors said modular-style construction reduced overall construction waste. Read more on how eco-friendly buildings start with steel. About 89% of respondents in the same report indicated modular construction also provides a safer worksite. Because a great deal of pre-engineering occurs in advance at an off-site manufacturing facility at ground level, the potential for falls (the biggest cause of construction deaths) is greatly reduced.

The distinction between prefabricated and pre-engineered steel building construction

In a previous article, we explored the reasons why a lot of commercial steel buildings share a similar design. When considering the finished aesthetic of a building, it’s important to understand the difference between prefabricated (or modular) metal structures and pre-engineered steel structures. As the two main commercial and industrial steel building systems, each offers their own advantages and suitable uses. In either case, the completed buildings are sturdy, efficient and cost-effective.

Summit Steel Buildings works on larger, heavier duty commercial construction products and chooses to use pre-engineering because it delivers immense structural integrity as an affordable construction solution that benefits your business or project.

Prefabricated metal structures

Prefabrication means building components (such as entire walls and roof structures) are manufactured in a factory and then taken to the jobsite in parts to be assembled. More suitable for smaller structures, they are incredibly easy to assemble, take less time to put together, and come in a variety of standardized sizes, from sheds and garages to industrial storage units. Because of the narrow range of premade parts, the final structures tend to be the boxy, standard-looking cube you’re familiar to seeing.

Pre-engineered steel buildings

Pre-engineering involves custom construction of building panels and smaller sections where the specs have been determined before production of the building materials. The specifications are determined by the building’s final purpose, local building codes and the require weight loads needed and assembled onsite. Because of steel’s high strength-to-weight ration, the building can use any architectural design. Pre-engineered buildings use a steel skeleton atop a concrete foundation to build the framework and rely on a steel panel system. Cold-formed steel panels arrive pre-welded, pre-cut and pre-hole punched to reduce construction times, can support any R-value insulation and are available in a wide range of exterior finishes.

Benefits of using pre-engineered steel construction systems for your next project:

  • Steel buildings are a quick and cost-effective way to get your business into operation or avoid interruptions when relocating.
  • Pre-engineered metal structures require little maintenance and use energy-efficient heating/environmental and electrical systems to keep ongoing costs down.
  • Commercial steel buildings are so ubiquitous because they are the intelligent way to build and maximize a building budget.

Pre-engineering has transformed construction practices,
let it do the same for your business operations

When you’re looking to grow your business and expand your operations, you’ll quickly come to appreciate the cost savings and higher earnings on your investment that pre-engineered building construction provides. It’s clear why pre-engineering has been adopted as the intelligent way to build industrial facilities over more traditional and more complicated construction types.
